Your Rated Conditions

Add each condition with its rating. Mark conditions that affect an arm or leg - conditions on both arms or both legs earn the bilateral factor, a 10% boost most veterans don't know about.

Showing an example (one 50% condition) - replace it with your real ratings.

Your Dependents

At a 30%+ combined rating, the VA pays more for your spouse, children, and dependent parents.

What Would One More Claim Be Worth?

Many veterans leave money unclaimed by skipping secondary conditions. Here's the real financial impact of adding one more rated condition:

What You Unlock at Each Level

  • βœ“0%
Service connection itself is a win

Even at 0%: free VA healthcare and prescriptions for the service-connected condition, 10-point federal hiring preference, discounted VA dental insurance, and $30-copay non-VA urgent care. And a 0% rating can be increased later as the condition worsens.

  • βœ“10%
Tax-free pay begins - plus the home-loan fee waiver

10% pays $180.42/month, 20% pays $356.66 - tax-free, for life. Also unlocked: the VA home loan funding fee waiver (saves thousands when buying or refinancing), Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) job training, and burial benefits.

  • βœ“30%
    Dependent pay + travel reimbursement

The VA adds monthly pay for your spouse, children under 18, children 18–23 in school, and dependent parents. You also unlock mileage reimbursement for travel to VA medical appointments.

  • βœ“50%
Priority Group 1: ALL VA healthcare becomes free

No copays for any condition - service-connected or not. Free prescriptions, hearing aids, CPAP machines, and medical equipment, plus free non-VA urgent care visits. Military retirees (20+ years): 50% is the CRDP threshold - full retirement pay AND full VA compensation, no offset.

  • 60%
    TDIU pathway opens (single condition)

One condition rated 60%+ plus inability to hold substantially gainful employment = eligible to apply for TDIU (VA Form 21-8940) and be paid at the 100% rate.

  • 70%
    TDIU (combined) + base access

At 70%+ combined with one condition at 40%+, the TDIU pathway opens. You also gain commissary, exchange, and MWR privileges on military bases - and many states begin partial property-tax exemptions here.

  • 100%
Maximum compensation - and a benefits avalanche

$3,938.58/month alone, more with dependents. Plus: full no-cost VA dental care, federal student loan forgiveness (TPD discharge), Space-A military flights, SDVI life insurance premium waiver, no-cost non-VA emergency room care, and extras like Shades of Green resort access and Disney DAS.

  • P&T
Permanent & Total: protection + family benefits

The VA deems your conditions static - no more re-examinations, no reduction risk. Your family unlocks CHAMPVA healthcare coverage and Chapter 35 (DEA) education benefits worth ~$50,000, and most states grant their top tier: full property-tax exemption, free plates, park passes, and hunting/fishing licenses. If your conditions won’t improve, ask the VA for P&T status explicitly.

Your Payment Grows Every Year (COLA)

COLA - the Cost-of-Living Adjustment - is an automatic raise applied to VA disability pay every December to keep up with inflation. It's the law, it requires nothing from you, and it compounds for life. The last 10 years:

20170.3%
20182.0%
20192.8%
20201.6%
20211.3%
20225.9%
20238.7%
20243.2%
20252.5%
20262.8%

10-year average: 3.1% per year. At your current $1,132.90/month, a 2.8% COLA (this year's) adds about $31.72/month - automatically, every year, on top of everything shown above.

What about 2027? Nobody knows yet.

The 2027 raise is calculated from July–September 2026 inflation and announced in mid-October 2026. Until then every figure going around is a forecast - The Senior Citizens League currently projects 3.8% (as of August 2026; they had it at 3.9% in April, so it moves). At your $1,132.90/month that would be roughly $43.05/month more.

Worth knowing, not worth planning on. The number that counts lands in mid-October 2026.
