Insomnia VA rating
The VA rates insomnia under DC 9413, and most ratings land in the 10β100% (rated with mental health) range. What decides yours is the criteria below and what your record actually documents.
What the criteria ask for at each level
DC 9413 β 38 CFR Β§4.130
| Rating | What the record has to show |
|---|---|
| 0% | Diagnosed, but symptoms don't interfere with work or social functioning. |
| 10% | Mild or transient symptoms that decrease work efficiency only during periods of significant stress. |
| 30% | Occasional decrease in work efficiency with intermittent inability to perform tasks β mild memory loss, panic attacks (weekly or less). |
| 50% | Reduced reliability and productivity β impaired judgment, difficulty with relationships, panic attacks more than once a week. |
| 70% | Deficiencies in MOST areas (work, school, family, judgment, thinking, mood) β suicidal ideation, obsessional rituals, near-continuous panic or depression. |
| 100% | Total occupational and social impairment β gross thought impairment, persistent delusions/hallucinations, danger to self or others, disorientation. |
The schedule's own words
Ratings turn on specific terms, and a record that describes the same reality in different language often reads as a lower rating. These are the words this code measures:
- occupational and social impairment
- panic attacks more than once a week
- deficiencies in most areas
- unable to establish and maintain effective relationships
Evidence that moves this rating
- Ongoing therapy/psychiatry records β ask your provider to track PHQ-9 / GAD-7 / PCL-5 scores over time
- Buddy statements from spouse or family describing changes and worst days
- Work records: reprimands, accommodations, terminations connected to symptoms
What your statement has to cover
Doctors chart symptoms; they rarely chart consequences. That part is yours, and it is usually what separates a documented rating from a reported one.
- ONE rating rule: the VA combines ALL mental health diagnoses (PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia) into a single rating β filing several labels does not stack percentages. File the ONE diagnosis with your strongest evidence; the VA must consider your claim as covering any mental condition your symptoms support.
- Choosing the diagnosis: PTSD requires a VERIFIED in-service stressor (easy with a combat badge, hard without). No documented stressor? Depression or anxiety SECONDARY to a service-connected physical condition (chronic pain, tinnitus) skips the stressor requirement entirely β often the stronger path.
- Already rated for a mental health condition? A new mental diagnosis files as an INCREASE to your single combined rating β combined symptoms can push you into a higher bracket (50% β 70% β 100%).
- Frame everything as functional loss: not "I get anxious" but "I have not been inside a grocery store in two years."
- Quantify: panic attack frequency per week, nights of sleep lost, jobs lost or reprimands received.
- Cover all five domains: thinking/memory, relationships, completing tasks, leaving the house, self-care.
Our Statement Builderwalks through the questions that produce that kind of statement, in the schedule's own terms.
What insomnia can lead to1 documented pathway
A secondary claim runs through a condition the VA already accepts, so the argument about your service is already won. What is left is the medical link β and a nexus opinion has to name the mechanism, not just the pair.
| Can lead to | The mechanism a nexus has to state |
|---|---|
| Depression | Chronic sleep deprivation and daytime exhaustion directly cause depression. |
A pathway existing in the literature is not the same as your claim being granted β your records and the VA decide that. How secondary claims work covers the argument.
Before you spend money on this claim
VA ratings do not add. Each new rating applies only to the part of you the VA still counts as unimpaired, then rounds to the nearest ten β so from 70%, a new 10% condition leaves you at exactly 70% and changes your payment by nothing.
That does not make the claim worthless; it can still matter for TDIU, for SMC, or later when something else is added. But it is worth knowing before you pay for a nexus letter rather than after. Check what one more condition does at your rating β it takes a minute.
