100 Percent VA Disability Rating

A 100% VA disability rating pays the top rate on the schedule, rising with dependents, and carries no restriction on working β€” a veteran at 100% schedular can hold any job, full-time, indefinitely. That is the difference between schedular 100% and TDIU, which pays the same and does not.

How much does 100% VA disability pay in 2026?

HouseholdMonthlyPer year
Veteran alone$3,938.58$47,262.96
With spouse$4,158.17$49,898.04
With spouse + 1 child$4,318.99$51,827.88
With spouse + 2 children$4,428.10$53,137.20

What a 100% rating actually means

One hundred percent schedular means your combined rating reached the top of the scale. Nothing further can be gained from the combined figure β€” but additional ratings can still matter for Special Monthly Compensation, which is paid on top of the schedule rather than inside it.

How the VA arrives at 100%

Either one condition rated 100% under its own criteria, or a combination that computes to 95 or above and rounds to 100.

What one more condition would actually add at 100%

VA ratings do not add up. Each new one applies only to the part of you the VA still counts as unimpaired, and the final figure is rounded to the nearest ten. From 100%, that arithmetic produces this:

There is nowhere above 100% on the rating schedule. What exists above it is Special Monthly Compensation β€” SMC-K and the higher levels β€” which is paid in addition to the 100% rate and is decided by specific circumstances rather than by combining more percentages.

A new condition ratedCombined becomesMonthly change
10%100% no change$0
20%100% no change$0
30%100% no change$0
40%100% no change$0
50%100% no change$0

At 100% there is nothing above you on the combined scale. What still exists is Special Monthly Compensation, which is paid on top of the rating rather than inside it.

This models one new condition against your current combined figure. The VA re-combines every condition from scratch, which can differ by a rounding step β€” the VA math calculator runs the exact version with your real list, and shows each step of the arithmetic.

100% and TDIU

Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate to veterans rated below 100%. The schedular test in 38 CFR Β§4.16(a) asks for one condition rated 60% or more, or a combined rating of 70% or more with at least one condition at 40% or more.

A 70%+ combined rating meets the first half. Whether a 40% condition sits inside it depends on your individual ratings, not the combined figure. TDIU also requires that your conditions prevent substantially gainful employment, and taking steady work generally ends it β€” which is why it is a decision about your working life, not only about a rating.

What benefits come with 100%?

Health-care priority, copays, education, home-loan treatment and dependent eligibility all shift as the rating climbs, and the thresholds are not evenly spaced. Rather than repeat them here, the full breakdown lives in one place:

Frequently asked questions about 100% VA disability

Can I work with a 100% VA disability rating?
With a 100% schedular rating, yes β€” full-time, no restrictions, permanently. TDIU pays the same monthly amount but exists because your conditions prevent substantially gainful employment, so holding steady work generally ends it. If you are on TDIU and considering a job, understand that difference first.
Is 100% permanent?
Not automatically. A rating can be marked permanent and total, which means the VA does not expect improvement and stops scheduling routine re-examinations. A 100% rating without that designation can still be re-examined.
Can I get more than 100%?
Not on the combined rating scale. Special Monthly Compensation pays above the 100% rate for specific circumstances β€” SMC-K for the loss of use of a body part, including erectile dysfunction, is the one most commonly missed.
Does 100% pay more with a spouse?
Yes. Dependent additions apply at every rating from 30% up, including 100%, and the amounts are largest at the top of the scale.
