70 Percent VA Disability Rating

A 70% VA disability rating pays a monthly amount that rises with dependents, and it is the combined figure named in the schedular TDIU test β€” 70% or more combined, with at least one condition rated 40% or more. From 70%, a new 10% condition adds nothing at all.

What a 70% rating actually means

Seventy is the level where most veterans first hit the dead zone. Ten percent combined with seventy is seventy-three, which rounds straight back to seventy. A condition worth chasing at 30% is worth exactly zero dollars here, and nothing on the decision letter tells you that.

How the VA arrives at 70%

Most often several conditions combined, frequently with mental health carrying a large share β€” 70% is the mental-health criteria level describing deficiencies in most areas such as work, school, family relations, judgement or mood.

What one more condition would actually add at 70%

VA ratings do not add up. Each new one applies only to the part of you the VA still counts as unimpaired, and the final figure is rounded to the nearest ten. From 70%, that arithmetic produces this:

This is the level the table below was built for. The honest answer from 70% is that small conditions do nothing and a 20% condition is the smallest one that moves you β€” which is worth knowing before, not after, you spend on a nexus letter.

A new condition ratedCombined becomesMonthly change
10%70% no change$0
20%80% +$293.70
30%80% +$293.70
40%80% +$293.70
50%90% +$553.85

From 70%, the smallest new condition that changes anything is 20%. Anything below that leaves your combined rating β€” and your payment β€” exactly where it is.

This models one new condition against your current combined figure. The VA re-combines every condition from scratch, which can differ by a rounding step β€” the VA math calculator runs the exact version with your real list, and shows each step of the arithmetic.

70% and TDIU

Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate to veterans rated below 100%. The schedular test in 38 CFR Β§4.16(a) asks for one condition rated 60% or more, or a combined rating of 70% or more with at least one condition at 40% or more.

A 70%+ combined rating meets the first half. Whether a 40% condition sits inside it depends on your individual ratings, not the combined figure. TDIU also requires that your conditions prevent substantially gainful employment, and taking steady work generally ends it β€” which is why it is a decision about your working life, not only about a rating.

What benefits come with 70%?

Health-care priority, copays, education, home-loan treatment and dependent eligibility all shift as the rating climbs, and the thresholds are not evenly spaced. Rather than repeat them here, the full breakdown lives in one place:

Frequently asked questions about 70% VA disability

Does 70% VA disability qualify for TDIU?
It meets the combined half of the schedular test under 38 CFR Β§4.16(a), which asks for 70% or more combined with at least one condition rated 40% or more. Whether the second half is met depends on your individual ratings, and TDIU additionally requires that your conditions prevent substantially gainful employment.
Why did my rating stay at 70% after a new condition was granted?
Because VA math is not addition. Seventy combined with ten is seventy-three, and Β§4.25 rounds to the nearest ten β€” back to 70%. The grant is still real, and it can matter for TDIU or for future increases, but the combined rating and the payment did not move.
What is the fastest way from 70% to 100%?
There is no shortcut, and anyone selling one is selling something. What the arithmetic says is that from 70% you need a substantial new rating or an increase on an existing condition β€” the table on this page prices each option.
Can I work with a 70% rating?
Yes, with no restrictions whatsoever. Schedular ratings never limit employment. Only TDIU carries that condition, because it exists for veterans whose conditions prevent steady work.
