VA disability pay dates 2026: all 12, and the 5 early ones
There's a particular feeling that comes with checking your account on the 1st and finding nothing there. It's not really about the money for most people. It's that the VA is the one paying it, and the VA has form for going quiet.
Nine times out of ten the answer is boring: the payment came early, it was already in the account, and it arrived four days ago while you weren't looking.
Here's every 2026 date, the five that move, and the rule underneath it all.
Every VA disability pay date in 2026
Two things to know before the table. The VA pays on the first business day of the month. And each payment covers the month that just ended - the deposit on 1 June is your May money.
| Benefits for | Payment lands | Early? |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | Friday 30 January 2026 | Early - 1 Feb is a Sunday |
| February 2026 | Friday 27 February 2026 | Early - 1 Mar is a Sunday |
| March 2026 | Wednesday 1 April 2026 | On the 1st |
| April 2026 | Friday 1 May 2026 | On the 1st |
| May 2026 | Monday 1 June 2026 | On the 1st |
| June 2026 | Wednesday 1 July 2026 | On the 1st |
| July 2026 | Friday 31 July 2026 | Early - 1 Aug is a Saturday |
| August 2026 | Tuesday 1 September 2026 | On the 1st |
| September 2026 | Thursday 1 October 2026 | On the 1st |
| October 2026 | Friday 30 October 2026 | Early - 1 Nov is a Sunday |
| November 2026 | Tuesday 1 December 2026 | On the 1st |
| December 2026 | Thursday 31 December 2026 | Early - 1 Jan is a holiday |
Five early dates out of twelve. Two of them, July and October, catch people who've never seen an early payment before, because the previous early one was five months earlier and they'd stopped expecting it.
These are release dates, not guaranteed arrival times. Your bank posts the deposit on its own schedule, and some post the same morning while others take until the next business day.
Why the payment moves earlier, never later
The rule is one sentence: if the 1st isn't a business day, the payment goes out on the last business day before it.
That's worth sitting with, because it's the opposite of how most bills work. A direct debit due on a Sunday comes out Monday. A VA payment due on a Sunday comes out Friday. Nothing about a weekend or a federal holiday delays it.
Which produces the situation that generates most of the confusion:
- December 2026 benefits pay on Thursday 31 December 2026. 1 January 2027 is a federal holiday.
- So January 2027 has no deposit on its 1st. The money for that period already landed, three days into the last week of December.
Two payments in one calendar month, then a month that opens empty. Nothing is missing. The calendar just moved.
The VA pays for last month, not this one
This one costs people real money in planning, so it's worth being blunt about.
VA disability compensation is paid in arrears. You get paid at the start of June for the whole of May.
What that means in practice:
- A claim granted in May does not pay in May. The first deposit is at the start of June.
- Any back pay owed from your effective date is a separate lump sum, and it arrives on its own schedule rather than with the first monthly payment.
- If your rating changes mid-month, the new amount shows up in the following month's deposit.
The date that decides how much back pay you're owed isn't a payment date at all - it's your effective date, and for most veterans that's set by an intent to file.
What the 2026 payment is worth
The 2026 rates took effect on 1 December 2025, carrying a 2.8% cost-of-living increase. Monthly, for a veteran with no dependents:
| Rating | Monthly, 2026 |
|---|---|
| 10% | $180.42 |
| 30% | $552.47 |
| 50% | $1,132.90 |
| 70% | $1,808.45 |
| 100% | $3,938.58 |
Dependents change the number from 30% up. The 2026 VA disability pay rates guide has the full table with spouse, children and dependent parent additions, and the VA disability calculator runs your own combination - including the part most people get wrong, which is that the VA rounds once, at the end.
Before you assume a payment is missing
Three business days is the honest threshold. Before that, it's almost always the bank rather than the VA.
After that, check these in order:
| Check | Why it's first | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Look at the end of last month | If the 1st was a weekend or holiday, the money already arrived | Your bank statement |
| Confirm your direct deposit details | A closed or changed account is the most common cause, and nothing warns you | VA.gov, under profile and direct deposit |
| Ask whether the payment was released | Only the VA can see where it went | VA benefits, 1-800-827-1000 |
Bottom line
The VA pays on the first business day of the month, for the month just gone, and it moves the date earlier rather than later when the 1st isn't a business day. In 2026 that happens five times: January, February, July, October and December benefits all land on the last business day before the 1st.
Put the five early dates in your phone once and the whole question goes away for a year. The December one especially - that payment arrives on 31 December 2026, and the year opens with an empty 1st that means nothing at all.

Quick questions
When is the VA disability payment date for 2026?
The first business day of each month, covering the month that just ended. In 2026 that lands on the 1st for seven months. The other five arrive early because the 1st is a weekend or a federal holiday: January benefits pay Friday 30 January, February pays Friday 27 February, July pays Friday 31 July, October pays Friday 30 October, and December pays Thursday 31 December 2026.
Why did my VA payment arrive at the end of last month?
Because the 1st landed on a weekend or a federal holiday, so the payment moved earlier rather than later. The VA never pushes a payment back for a non-banking day. It's the same money for the same month, just released on the last business day before the 1st, and it means the following month has no deposit on its 1st.
Does the VA pay in advance or in arrears?
In arrears. The deposit you get on 1 June is your May compensation. This catches people out in month one: a claim granted in May doesn't pay in May, it pays at the start of June. It's also why a rating that ends or changes mid-month shows up in the following month's deposit, not the current one.
When does the 2026 COLA increase show up in my payment?
The 2026 cost-of-living increase of 2.8% took effect on 1 December 2025, so the first payment at the new rate was the December 2025 benefit - deposited Wednesday 31 December 2025, early, because 1 January is a federal holiday. Anyone expecting the raise to land in a January deposit saw it a day before New Year instead.
What if my VA payment doesn't arrive on the expected date?
Give it three business days before treating it as missing. Direct deposit timing depends on your bank as well as the VA, and a payment released on the last business day of a month can post the next morning. If it still hasn't landed, VA benefits can be reached on 1-800-827-1000, and it's worth checking that your direct deposit details on VA.gov match your current account.
